What follows is a list of volunteer positions that are available in PACS programs. Not all of these programs are available all of the time as there are limitations to the number of volunteers any one program can accommodate.
Information and Referral
A service that links individuals with services on the peninsula or elsewere.
- Service Provider: you will be answering calls from a wide range of people asking for assistance with finding a daycare service to how to deal with an abusive situation. You will learn about the resources available in our community and the referral criteria. Training is provided for a computerized information system and hard copy resource library. Shifts are Monday to Friday, 4 hours per week, 6 month commitment.
Administration
Hone existing skills and/or learn new skills while helping staff provide services to a wide range of clients in an office setting.
- Clerical Assistant: you will assist in a variety of office tasks including filing, data entry, word processing, collection of statistical data; report preparation and the like. Some computer skill required. Various locations, 2 to 4 hours per week. Some work is project based and short term.
- Office Clerk: you will prepare items for large and small mail outs to community members and organizations, this could include addressing and stuffing envelopes, may also include some photocopying. Main Office - flexible days and times.
- Flyer/Pamphlet Distribution: you will deliver printed materials to various locations on the peninsula. Main office - flexible times and days.
- Special Events Assistant: you will help with a variety of events through out the year.- dances, fundraising, parade floats, mall displays etc. Different days and times. Team environment.
- Recycling Clerk: performs all the tasks relating to the shredding of paper for recycling. Main office - flexible days and times.
Shop by Phone Program
Grocery shop for home bound individuals living in the White Rock/South Surrey Area.
- Phoner/Shopper: you will phone a list of clients every Monday morning, then go shopping on Tuesday morning with a team of volunteers. The store delivers the groceries and picks up the money from the clients. You may phone or shop or do both. Time commitment - 2 to 4 hours per week.
Volunteer Wheels Program
Provides rides for clients living on the peninsula to essential medical appointments within the Lower Mainland/ Fraser Valley.
- Driver: you will take individuals to the appointment and return them to point of pick up. Must have own vehicle and clean driving record. Out of pocket expense are reimbursed. Flexible times and days and driving destinations.
Income Tax Program
Provides a free service for families and individuals with low income and no investment, rental or self employment income.
- Tax Service Provider: training provided at no charge by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. You will do returns for low income families and individuals.
Taxes may be done manually or on computer - software provided. Time commitment - mid January thru April with the option to stay on call throughout the year.
Food Bank
Assist in providing food for people who find themselves unable to provide adequate nourishment for themselves or family due to limited financial resources.
The food bank is currently open for client's 3 days a week and uses volunteers for different tasks on those days. Time commitment 2 to 4 hours/week.. Must be able to lift 20 lbs or more.
- Food Distribution Worker, Food Preparation Worker, Food Bag Assembler: you will assist getting the weekly food allotment ready for distribution.
- Food Sorter, Non Food Preparation Worker: you will receive, unpack, count , sort donated items or prepare and divide and package items for distribution.
- Van Driver: you will use the food bank van to pick up donated food stuffs from various locations in the community. Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Office Worker: you will receive and receipt donations, write thank you notes, register new clients and perform a variety of routine office tasks.
- Janitorial Worker: you will be responsible to keep all areas of the food bank clean, vacuum and wash floors, break down boxes and dispose of garbage.
- Food Inventory/Stock Assistant: you will assist with the management of inventory relating to weekly food menus.
- Children's Lunch Program Worker: you will prepare children's lunch bags at the beginning of the week for weekly distribution.
- Clothing Exchange Worker: you will sort, organize and display clothing donations.
Infant Development Programme
The play group provides support to families living with children who have been identified as having developmental delays.
- Play Group Assistant: you will assist in the set up and clean up of the play room in addition you will provide support to the parents participating in the group and you will play with the children. Time commitment - 2 to 3 hours /week in either White Rock or Newton, Wednesday or Friday.
Programs for People with Developmental Disabilities
These programs provide support to individuals with developmental disabilities to increase their independence and participation in the community.
- Leisure Buddy: you will visit with the individual and participate in social or recreational activities in the group home or at the Adult Day Program. Flexible days and times.
- Community Kitchen Worker: you will assist the program staff with the preparation of equipment and supplies for the cooking session.
